Welcome

Hello, UkPaolo/Archive 1, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. If you are stuck, and looking for help, please come to the New contributors' help page, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{helpme}} on your user page, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and vote pages using three tildes, like this: ~~~. Four tildes (~~~~) produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Mashed potatoes & gravy

Hi, just a note--it's considered bad form to put a speedy deletion notice on a page that's already on votes for deletion, even if there's a consensus to delete. Don't worry, an admin will get to it after the voting period is up. Anyway, let me add a belated welcome, and happy editing. Yours, Meelar (talk) 21:45, Jun 8, 2005 (UTC)

Don't worry--you did the right thing putting it on vfd. People vote "speedy" out of frustration--there are a lot of things that are obviously deletable, but don't meet the criteria at WP:CSD, such as this page. Thanks for all the hard work. Best, Meelar (talk) 12:59, Jun 9, 2005 (UTC)

disambigging

Hey. I appreciate what you did by moving Vaitahu to Vaitahu, Tahuata and making Vaitahu a disambig page...I was strongly considering doing it myself...my only problem is that you left a reference to Vaitahu pointing to it when you could very easily have disambigged it to Vaitahu, Tahuata instead of leaving it hanging. Try to keep in mind that not every WP user can follow a consistent train of thought when disambigging and look to reduce all redirects rather than just the double redirects so strongly frowned upon by the WP overgods. Thanks for your work, and I look forward to working with you in the future. Tomer TALK 09:47, Jun 20, 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, I saw later that you had, but when I tried to say so on your TALK page, the WP DB flaked out on me, then I fell asleep, then I went to work on the roof, then I got sunburnt, then I took a nap, and now here I am. :-p Tomer TALK 23:04, Jun 20, 2005 (UTC)

Dissambiguation page for Cathedral of San Salvador

About this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cathedrals#Spain (Excuse my poor english) Exists two Cathedral of San Salvador cathedrals in Spain, one in Oviedo and the other one in Zaragoza. Maybe we should do a dissambiguation page for Cathedral of San Salvador (I don't know do this).

popups in safari

Thanks for letting me know about problems in Safari. It seems to work in konqueror so I was hoping that it would in Safari too... I don't have access to a mac and I noticed that you're a compsci, so perhaps you'll be able to help to fix these problems. Do you know if there are any errors generated when you use the script? Maybe you could let me know. This link may help you to activate the debugger. Lupin 15:19, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

Another thing you may like to try: do you get popups on this page in Safari? I'm using that library to generate the popups. Lupin 04:03, 7 September 2005 (UTC)

Recent vandalism

Whilst I appreciate this IP has recently been the source of unwanted vandalism, please be aware that as per the notice above, it is a shared proxy by UK ISP, NTL. As such, it is shared by a large number of users, and any admins tempted to block the IP would be affecting plenty of genuine contributors, such as myself. Annoyingly, blocking of this IP is all too common. UkPaolo 21:46, 31 August 2005 (UTC)

Please understand that you are not alone -- all of us here share your frustration. Generally speaking, Wikipedia administrators are well-aware which IP ranges belong to National Transcommunications and have specific procedures for dealing with NTL-based vandals. That said, there are unfortunately instances where it is necessary to temporarily block an "anonymous" NTL IP address due to persistent vandalism.
As a paying subscriber, you may want to take this up with your ISP directly, complete with IP addresses and time stamps of the vandals edits which ultimately brought you here. If they are unable to provide you with any sort of resolution, you may want to consider changing to an alternet service provider, if possible. My condolences for the inconvenience caused by your fellow users; if there is anything else I can do to be of assistance, please let me know. Hall Monitor 22:18, 31 August 2005 (UTC)

WP:CP

Hi, you've reported copyright infringements to WP:CP in the last week, a new measure was recently passed to allow the speedy deltion of new pages that are cut and paste copyvios. Please follow these instructions if you come across this type of copyvio. Thanks. --nixie 23:58, 5 October 2005 (UTC)

Blatant copyright infringements may now be "speedied"

If an article and all its revisions are unquestionably copied from the website of a commercial content provider and there is no assertion of permission, ownership or fair use and none seems likely, and the article is less than 48 hours old, it may be speedily deleted. See CSD A8 for full conditions.

After notifying the uploading editor by using wording similar to:

{{nothanks-sd|pg=page name|url=url of source}} -- ~~~~

Blank the page and replace the text with

{{db-copyvio|url=url of source}}

to the article in question, leaving the content visible. An administrator will examine the article and decide whether to speedily delete it or not.

i didn't realise this had come into effect - the text above asks us to blank the page, replacing the text and leaving the content visible. Should it be blanked or not?! UkPaolo 07:36, 6 October 2005 (UTC)
If the page should or should not be blanked is still under discussion, to blank or not to blank was not a part of the proposal- it's more to do with admin preferences, it actually makes no difference if the page is blanked or not- so it up to you. Keep up the good work finding those copyvios. --nixie 11:04, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

You nominated this for speedy delteion as a copyvio. Remeber that the article creator is suppoed to be notived via {{nothanks-sd}} when you do this. Also are you quite sure that the source is in fact a commercial content provider, as required for this deletion criterion? DES (talk) 17:32, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

RE: Daniel Lane

Hi Paolo,

Thanks for the message. And thanks for tidying up my entry.

The point I was getting at was that alterations were being made to my entry ranging from that I "invented sea fairing ware fare and the postage stamp" (or some such nonsense) to changing the link to My MpSpace 'Profile' to a nonexistent MySpace ‘Blog’.

Anyway, speak soon D

Re : Ragamuffin

Hi UkPaolo,

Yes, I have included it in Wiktionary, with the template at the encyclopedia page. (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Ragamuffin). The deletion content begins from "According to Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable,...".

Just thought I'd leave a comment regarding my edits to Classical High School. My main reason for the revert was that I didn't consider a bulleted list to be very encyclopedic (and the article was still tagged for cleanup). I intentionally ommitted the motto for the same reasons, but will respect your decision to re-add it. Apologies for the British spelling of colour, I re-typed it without thinking, and fully appreciate color would be more appropriate for an article on a US school! All the best, UkPaolo/TALK 22:23, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

An infobox would have been prettier, but I didn't know what really belonged there: I should do more HS research. The Motto is apparently considered encyclopedic for colleges, so I don't see why it shouldn't be for high schools as well. Thanks for your cleanup efforts! :-) --SarekOfVulcan 22:25, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

Simpsons Vehicles

hey there, you just closed the AfD for List of vehicles in The Simpsons, as no consensus, and I was just intrigued to know why. I know it doesn't really matter, since that will default to a keep, but to my count there was 11 Keep's against 8 Delete's, which seemed relatively clear cut. Is there a policy on what the difference should be between votes for one to win outright? UkPaolo/TALK 08:29, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

The AfD discussions are not meant to be simple up/down voting processes where the decision goes to whichever viewpoint ekes out a simple majority of votes. This is why the name of the page was changed a few months ago from "Votes for Deletion" to "Articles for Deletion". Ideally, an AfD nomination will prompt a discussion which will eventually arrive at some sort of large agreement. What qualifies as a "large agreement" is subject to some debate. Some folks feel that unanimity or near-unanimity of opinion is needed for "consensus" to be claimed. Other folks feel that a mere supermajority (say, 75% of the "votes", to pick one standard used by many AfD closers) is sufficient. In addition, most folks who close AfD discussions endorse ignoring spurious reasoning when counting the "votes". e.g. If you vote "keep, because I don't like the nominator," well, that's a bogus vote and will almost certainly be ignored in the final analysis by anybody who closes AfD discussions.
I confess that I lean towards the supermajority side of things; I find the notion of requiring unanimous or near-unanimous opinion to be a bit too idealistic for my tastes, particularly in a project with as many participants as this. Under either circumstance, however, an 11/8 "vote" is near enough to an even split that there is obviously no consensus.
Hope this clears things up. → Ξxtreme Unction {yakłblah} 13:43, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

Hi UKPaolo, Just FYI I discussed the frequent inversion of Private Eye recently with a friend who works at W H Smith, and he admitted it is an internal cultural thing, and tacitly encouraged by some members of senior management. Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, UkPaolo/Archive 1, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. Redwolf24 runs the spam to keep members up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Celestianpower, and guided by the Advisory Committee comprised of FireFox, Flcelloguy, Titoxd, and Karmafist. The next set of elections will be in February, and I would be glad to see you vote, or even consider running for a position.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Celestianpower by email or talk page or the Esperanza talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

An Esperanzial note

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for having nominated me for adminship. Hi UkPaolo, I'm sorry that you couldn't accept Bling-chav's nomination. I didn't know he was acting in bad faith, and I should have checked his edits before voting. By the way, I think you're a great editor, and you're certainly qualified to become a sysop. I'm going on a temporary wikibreak right now, but when I return I'd like to nominate you. crack addict

why did you revert the contents of crack addict to being about police officers?!? StrengthCoach 20:43, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

hey there... what happenned is that a vandal moved Police officer to Crack addict. Unfortunately, you moved the article back by copy and pasting the contents (rather than using the move page function) which means the edit history would have been lost. I thus reverted the content of "police officer" (now wrongly at "crack addict") back to the police officer content, and listed it for an admin to move back to "police officer" merging the edit histories. I see an admin has now sorted it, and the police officer article is back as it should be. Hope that clarifies things! UkPaolo/talk 22:31, 5 February 2006 (UTC)
PS: you might like to read WP:MM to see how to properly move a page (for instance how to have moved "crack addict" back to "police officer". As I said above, the reason you can't just copy and paste the page content is that the edit history would be lost and (per the link I just gave you): "The GFDL requires acknowledgement of all contributors, and editors continue to hold copyright on their contributions unless they specifically give up this right." hope this helps, and thanks for trying to sort it out! student center issue

Hi,

I'm the head web developer at the Student Center, and can attest to the fact (and prove to you, if you wish) that Student Center IS a social networking site. I'm not sure what criteria for "social networking" you're using, but we have all of the features that the larger social networking sites have, including:

- customized profiles - "Friends" page, with Friendster-style approvals - journals (our name for our blogs) - photo albums

In addition, the Student Center has a total membership network-wide of nearly 1,000,000 registered users -- which is way more than some of the sites you've allowed to remain on the Wikipedia page in question.

Drop me a line -- I'd like to know your reasons for removing our site.

Thanks,

Tom

hey there... thanks for your message regarding The Student Center. I think there's some confusion... I only removed the screenshot which you added to List of social networking sites since the site wasn't included in our list, and because from what I could see at a glance, the site wasn't what I termed a "social networking site".
I note from the edit history that you had previously added The Student Center to our list, but this was removed by another editor (not myself).
Apologies for the confusion, I should have checked the edit history to see whether it had ever been included. If I'm honest, I didn't know there was an article about The Student Center, either, since I noted the screenshot was only in use on the list page (and was thus orphaned by my removal). I have now reverted List of social networking sites to include The Student Center, and will retract my nomination for the deletion of Image:Studentcenter screenshot.jpg, adding it to the appropriate article.
You may read our inclusion criteria for websites at WP:WEB, and I suggest that you ensure the article establishes the site's notability per these guidelines.
Hopefully this clarifies things! UkPaolo/talk 19:07, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

re: student center

Ah, thank you for the reversion -- I'll check the guidelines to make sure the Student Center meets the appropriate criteria.

Another Esperanzial note...

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

anyone can use the tube map image as says tfl themself

Firstly, since you appreciate it's not your image, you still cannot license the image under the GFDL. Since the image is still copyrighted by TfL, even if it is released under a "non commercial use allowed" license, it still cannot be legitimately used on Wikipedia (see [1]). I have now tagged the image appropriately as {{Noncommercial}}. I have update the listing on Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2006 February 15 and added a message on Talk:Tube map to gain the opinion of other editors. UkPaolo/talk 21:16, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
I have now started a discussion of this article on Wikipedia:Copyright_problems/Fair_use_claims#Fair_use_claims_needing_a_second_opinion UkPaolo/talk 21:23, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
I've left a comment there as well, but "personal and non-commercial" is not the same as "personal or non-commercial" - as this is non-commercial but not personal, I'm not convinced it should stay. This seems to have come up a few times in the past, and every time it's ended up with not using the images. Cheers! --Mpk 23:25, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
